“Each work is specific in its exhibition space and its setup. In the exhibition space, the relationship between work, artist and curator influences the meaning of the work itself”. The module proposes a reflection on the dynamics that are activated in the complex relationship with artist, exhibition space and curatorial mediation at the moment of installation and the "putting into operation" of a work. Starting from some basic notions of exhibition teaching, with the related references on what is meant by correct arrangement and communication of the works, a path will be built that includes technical aspects, such as the management of the physical space of the exhibition, and critical aspects, such as nature explanatory texts in the presentation of a work, phenomenological, such as the importance of the continuous remodulation of the meaning of the work according to its exposure. The objective is to outline the moment of installation as a particular environment of learning and interaction of knowledge according to a constructivist, organic and transdisciplinary approach. The next step involves a reflection on the ways of approaching the figure of the artist in his operational space in the moment of critical reflection on his work: the transition from the atelier to the exhibition space, considering the possibilities given by critical writing.
With a collaborative and relational intention, in which the teacher acts as facilitator, space will be given to the participants, to their work, sharing as much as possible a knowledge that ideally nourishes a practice. It requires the assimilation of some key concepts and the knowledge of the fundamental historical passages on the evolution of the curatorial figure and the types of exhibitions and installations.
For this lesson plan, it will be used materials such as PDF files, images, videos with interviews with artists, illustrations of exhibited works, introductions to the dynamics of curatorial practices . Reference will be made to exhibitions and living artists, including emerging ones. An extensive bibliography of orientation is provided, to delve deeper into both the theoretical and museographic references proposed in the course; nevertheless will be introduced the recent developments in curatorial practices and methods of dialogue with artists. There will be visits to exhibition and artistic spaces.
