Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
For this purpose, a multidisciplinary knowledge is required that ranges from chemistry, physics, to materials science, in order to fully understand the most important aspects of the use of some synthetic chemicals for the formulation of products.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of the main commercial products used in this field. Knowledge of the problems related to the degradation of materials and understanding of the properties of the main additives used in commercial formulations. Understanding of the environmental impact and critical points of the products taken into consideration.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Knowing how to solve practical problems relating to the choice of the most useful formulation for the purpose, in order to choose the most suitable products for both new constructions and restoration interventions.
3. Judgment skills
Knowing how to evaluate and recognize the cementitious formulation used in the production of a specific product. Knowing how to recognize any errors through a critical analysis of the activity of the "mix designer" operating on a construction site.
4. Communication skills
Knowing how to communicate the knowledge learned and the result of their application using appropriate terminology, both oral and written. Knowing how to interact with the teacher and with fellow students also with a view to joining a team.
5. Learning skills
Knowing how to take notes, selecting and collecting information according to their importance and priority. Knowing how to be sufficiently autonomous in the application and critical evaluation of the themes proposed in the theoretical part.

Assessment methods
Through a series of questions that simulate real problems, the student will have to demonstrate both the learning of the topics taught in class and the ability to expose them formally.
The oral exam lasts about 30 minutes and must be sustained on the dates of appeal agreed with the teacher during the exam session.
To obtain a pass (18/30), the candidate must have acquired basic training knowledge relating to the production and use of chemical formulations.
In particular, the student must demonstrate:
- to know and apply the phases involved in the restoration;
- to know the main diagnostic techniques;
- to know the types of degradation.
- to know the characteristics required of the materials used in the restoration
- the definition and the role of each component in some formulations taken as examples.
The mark can be increased up to the maximum (30/30) if this knowledge is correctly applied to the restoration materials analyzed during the course.
In particular, two further questions will be posted which will allow the vote to be increased by a maximum of 6/30 for each answer.
The questions in question will be related to the evaluation of the study of the following topics:
1 Formulations used in cleaning artistic works
Chemical-physical aspects of detergency,
Knowledge of the basic components of commercial detergents,
Wettability and surface tension;
Synthesis of polymeric products.
2 Definition and various types of consolidation.
Formulations of some consolidating agents;
Glue systems theory.
Formulations of glues and adhesives,
Types of cement and mortars
Polymer additives,
Self-healing materials
Nanotechnologies
Products used in protection and waterproofing.
Honors will be awarded if the candidate highlights their competence and ability to propose the most appropriate solutions to real problems related to the processes studied during the course.
