The subject of the meetings (which will be partly seminar-based) will be research into the linguistic and cultural characteristics of Asian xenisms in Latin and vernacular travel reports between the 13th and 15th centuries, starting from the hypothesis that they are the linguistic form of the registration-acclimatisation of the Other within one's own symbolic-cultural horizon.
Knowledge
- travel literature (13th-15th centuries); comparative linguistic analysis; cultural history of medieval Asia-Europe relations.
Skills
- Strengthening passive competence in ancient French (morphosyntax, prose stylistics) and active competence in comparative analysis of Romance languages and textual analysis (with particular reference to the modes of argumentative rhetoric).
Basic knowledge of Old French, Latin and Medieval History.
Anthropological theories on Otherness; history of European penetration in Asia; repertoires of xenisms in Latin and Romance languages.
Texts and bibliography will be provided during the lessons, and made available on the Moodle platform.
The learning assessment will take place through an oral test, based on translation and commentary of texts, and on lexical analysis.
