The course "German language 2" consisting of the teacher's module (30 hours, 2 semester) and the CEL DaF classes, constitutes the second step in a path intending to lead students to acquire key notions and skills in phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon, sociolinguistics, textual linguistics and translation such as to allow them to move with confidence in the different text types and in the different registers of the German language, while the exercises (Deutsch als Fremdsprache, DaF) aim to lead students to reach level C1 of the common European framework in the four competences in the three-year period.
In the second year, the topics of syntax, textual linguistics and translation will be addressed, while the linguistic exercises (DaF) in support of the course aim at achieving level B2 (written and oral production) / B2 + (written and oral comprehension).
1) Knowledge and understanding:
knowledge of complex syntactic structures of the German language; knowledge of the category of "modality" in German; knowledge of the basics of textual linguistics; knowledge of different German text types and of the linguistic strategies that characterize them; knowledge of the morphosyntactic, lexical and textual elements necessary for communication in German at B2 / B2 + level.

2) Applied knowledge and understanding:
Metalinguistic reflection, also from a contrastive perspective with Italian, on complex syntactic and textual structures of the German language. Ability to use the appropriate terminology in the analysis of texts that present the analysed structures. Ability to understand a university lecture on a linguistic topic. Ability to read and understand texts of different nature, with different functions and different linguistic characteristics. In general, ability to produce (at B2 level) and to understand (at B2 + level) written and oral texts in German.

3) Autonomy of judgment:
Ability to recognize complex structures of the German language typical of different communication situations and different registers. Ability to recognize the best translations of the phenomena dealt with in class among a range of alternatives. Express a personal and original position on topical issues, also taking into account intercultural aspects. Ability to independently solve problems of understanding and interpretation of German texts.

4) Communication skills:
receptive skills at a B2 + level, i.e. ability to attend lectures and university lectures, news and films. Ability to understand articles on a variety of topics. B2 level production skills, i.e. being able to express and argue one's point of view on a social and / or (inter) cultural issue, both orally and in writing. Interactive skills at B2 level, i.e. being able to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and fluency sufficient to interact with native speakers. Ability to intervene in the classroom, in the virtual classroom and in exercises.

5) Ability to learn:
Ability to take notes during a university lesson. Ability to properly use the bilingual and monolingual dictionary. Ability to use linguistic resources on the internet. Ability to use virtual classroom tools (Moodle).
Competences acquired in the course of Lingua Tedesca 1.
Dr. Palilla's course (30 hours, 2 semester) aims to provide an overview of the syntax of the German language in its various written registers and in different text types (Textsorten). Furthermore, the course will address the topic of modality from a German-Italian contrastive perspective. Through the analysis and translation of real language examples taken from texts belonging to different text types and different registers, the module aims to consolidate and expand the students' proficiency in German, with particular regard to the lexical, morphological and syntactic level. At the end of the module, students will be able to recognize the main phenomena of German syntax, analyze them and translate them correctly into Italian, also in relation to the specific textual type in which they appear.
After a brief overview of the written German language, with particular regard to the notion of Textsorte within textual linguistics, and after discussing the basics of the syntactic structure of German (topologisches Modell), the following phenomena will be illustrated during the teacher's module:
syntax, function and translation of German connectors (Konnektoren);
the category of modality in German, with particular regard to syntax, function and translation of modal particles;
types of passives in German (weden-Passiv; Zustandspassiv; bekommen-Passiv / Rezipienten-Passiv) and syntax, functions and translation of the passive in written German;
syntax, function and translation of the German Pro-Formen (pronouns and Pro-Adverbien);

The theoretical work on German syntax will be supported by a translation work that the students will carry out in part independently. For each lesson of the course, students will be asked to read some short texts in German and to translate some parts of them. The translations will be commented during the lessons by the teacher, who will highlight their lexical, syntactic and morphological peculiarities.

The DaF classes (three parallel groups E1A, E1B, in the first and second semester) are aimed at developing written and oral, receptive, productive and interactive skills. They propose texts, including newspaper articles, on social and cultural issues (study, work, interpersonal relationships, health, emotions, nature, environment, nutrition, etc.) as a starting point for classroom activities (reading / listening, discussion, productions written), also aimed at the acquisition of vocabulary and complex grammatical structures.

Specialized tutoring (offered by advanced students or doctoral students): support for the review of grammar topics (including by conducting exam simulations); exercises of written production (Leserbrief), also in small groups.

Test 1.
WRITTEN TEST: it aims to verify the acquisition of theoretical-formal knowledge in the context of the syntax of the German language, also in a contrastive German-Italian perspective, dealt with in Dr. Palilla's classes. The written exam aims to verify the following knowledge:
a) Translation of a short text in German containing one or more phenomena dealt with in lectures;
b) theoretical question with closed stimulus with open answer on one or more linguistic phenomena present in the passage to be translated;
c) exercises (such as the syntactic analysis) on the phenomenon / phenomena under consideration.

In evaluating the exam, the following elements are taken into consideration:
a) adequacy in the translation and in the answers and in the solution of the exercises in relation to the skills that the student is required to have acquired at the end of the course; b) completeness in the answers and requests in which the exercises are articulated in relation to the skills that the student is required to have acquired at the end of the course; c) ability to articulate the answers to open-ended questions in a logical and clear way; d) mastery of the specialized language of linguistics.
To pass the exam it is necessary to achieve a grade of not less than 18/30. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, students must instead demonstrate that they have acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to articulate the answers to the open-ended questions in a logical, clear, complete (also with pertinent comparisons with Italian in a contrastive key) way and with the use of correct linguistic terminology. Duration: 60 minutes.

ORAL EXAM:
Candidates who have passed the module's written exam are admitted to the oral exam. In this text, the ability to expose and discuss linguistics topics covered in the module part is tested. In the event of insufficient tests, the results of the written tests remain valid for the remaining sessions of the academic year.

Test 2. Grammar test (filling and transformation exercises, without dictionary), 60 min.

Test 3. Written expression (Leserbrief), with monolingual vocabulary, for a total of 90 min.

Test 4: oral expression (short Referat on a topic), approx. 10 min: no note.

PROVE IN ITINERE
Students who regularly attend classes and who have already passed the Language 1 exam will be offered the opportunity to take tests 2 (grammar test), 3 (written expression) and 4 (oral expression) in itinere, during the DaF classes.
Test 2: during the second semester; to access it, the student must have participated at the end of the first semester in a simulation (with correction, without grade).
Test 3: at the end of the second semester: to access it, the student must have participated in two simulations.
Test 4: during the second semester, on dates and times to be agreed with the CEL.

Test 1 is offered ONLY during regular sessions, while tests 2, 3, 4 can only be taken during the regular exam sessions.
The prove in itinere are identical to the tests of the regular exams.

The results of the individual exams (in itinere or during the sessions) remain valid for the other sessions of the same academic year. As long as all the parts are not passed, the student must re-enroll for the exam in order to take the missing part.
If the student does not pass all the exam tests by the January session, the results achieved up to that time will be canceled.
In the calculation of the overall mark of German language 1, the individual tests enter with the following weights: test 1 = 60%, test 2: 15%, test 3= 25%; test 4 = 0%.
