This course is part of the supplementary curriculum for the three-year degree program in Languages, Cultures, and Societies of Asia and Mediterranean Africa. It aims to help students achieve the training objectives related to humanistic cultural skills.
By the end of this course unit students should normally:

1. Acquire a comprehensive understanding of the key topics related to the cultural history of Chinese religion in medieval and late imperial China;
2. Understand the continuities and transformations within the religions and belief systems studied, including their internal dynamics;
3. Source and critically evaluate a variety of materials, including books, journals, primary sources, and web-based resources relevant to the course topics.
Students are required to have passed the exam History of Philosophy and Religions of China 1 [LT0470].
The course requires an excellent knowledge of the history of China in the imperial period.
This course provides an in-depth examination of the history of thought and religions in China, from the medieval period to the present day. It focuses on the relationship between religion and power and explores the role of religion in society. The course will also analyze the revival of religions in contemporary China, featuring case studies investigating the belief systems of various Chinese ethnic minorities and diaspora communities.
