The teaching module English Language and Translation 2 mod. 1 is part of the core subject area "attività formative di base" of the Degree in Language and Cultural Mediation and aims at enabling students to acquire a solid communicative competence of the English language. The contents of mod. 1 and mod. 2 integrate and complement each other to form the official course English Language and Translation 2 Mod. 1 is a semestral blended module which will be completed by applied, practical language classes called "esercitazioni", which will be part of the final exam, focusing on the oral use of the language. The module will explore aspects of English morphology, grammar and syntax in a contrastive approach with the Italian language. Language competence will be developed at the B2 level of QCER.
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand and produce a translational reflection on contrastive elements of English/Italian languages as a B2 level of QCER; they will be able to recognize and describe the grammar and syntactic features of English and Italian in a contrastive perspective; they will be able to use the appropriate linguistic terminology and will be able to function in communicative situations at the B2 level of QCER.
They will also be able to use the material provided by their teacher in an autonomous way and will be able to self-assess their skills and competences as acquired during the course.
Pre-requisites of this course are a level B2 of the QCER and an excellent competence of their native language, usually Italian. A good level of autonomy in the study method and a substantial cultural background will favour a rapid acquisition of the content of the course.
This module is aimed at providing following contents: the morphological, grammatical and syntactical frameworks of contemporary English will be observed and described. Beginning with words as the building blocks of language, the course investigates grammatical and sintactical structures and how words can be formed in English and the ways in which they are contrasted to the Italian language in a translational perspective.

The final exam will consist of two tests, a written and an oral one, which will test the students' competence on the topics explored in both modules, Mod 1 and Mod 2 of Lingua Inglese 2. Students will be allowed 60 minutes to complete the written test, which will focus on all the language and translational features addressed during the whole the course. The oral test, which will deal with a conversation with the teacher about general topics and a short presentation on a specific theme explored in the course of the esercitazioni, is obligatory and will focus on the communicative competence of English at the B2 level of QCER. The two marks of the written and the oral part will be calculated for the final result of the exam.
Lectures, seminars, self-assessment methods, tutoring.
The course consists of lectures and blended learning. The blended mode favours the focus on practice that this course aims to foster, so it is proposed to follow the theoretical notions with in-depth analyses or guided applied exercises, together with audio-video material available online. The monitoring of students' work will be carried out through resources on the Moodle platform, such as forums.
