The course is part of of the core educational activities of the Master's Degree in History of Arts and Conservation of Artistic Heritage. It aims to provide students with basic knowledge of the Italian Renaissance art, with an openness towards some European contexts. Particular attention will be given to the development of critical tools essential for an approach to Art History as a humanistic discipline.
- Knowledge of Art History of the 15th and 16th centuries, with attention to contexts, chronologies and historical events. It will not only be essential to know the author of a work of art, but also to be able to place it in space-time, to read its artistic language, iconography and typology, with possible insights into its commissioning and, more generally, into its historical context.
- Mastery of an appropriate vocabulary to express knowledge. Ability to correctly describe a work of art.
- At the end of the course students must have acquired the ability to recognize artists and to analyze works and contexts considered during the course and found in the bibliography. The recognition of the studied works of arts belongs to the basic knowledge provided by this course.
Knowledge and appropriate use of the Italian language, grammar and syntax.
The course aims to provide students with the basic tools for understanding and analysing the artistic events of the 15th and 16th centuries, with an Italian focus and some European openings. Particular attention will be paid not only to the artists, but also to the historical periodization, the different regional contexts and iconography, with the aim of soliciting a first critical approach to the discipline, beyond a mnemonic study of the textbook.
The bibliography will be communicated at the beginning of the course.
For basic knowledge, in addition to the course notes, the student may refer to:
- F. Poli - F. Filippi - F. Cappelletti - G.M. Fara, "La bellezza resta. Arte, architettura, patrimonio". 3. "Dal Rinascimento al Manierismo", Milano, Pearson-Edizioni Scolastiche Bruno Mondadori, 2022.
- S.J. Campbell and M.W. Cole, "The Art of the Renaissance in Italy. A new history", Turin, Einaudi, 2015.
The written examination consists in the recognition of three works of art of which it will be necessary to identify the author, the subject, the dating and the art-historical context. There will then be two short-answer questions (maximum 20 lines). The correct use of the Italian language and an appropriate vocabulary will also be evaluated.
Class lectures with Power Point presentation support.
