This is a core course in the Bachelor's degree programme in LCSL. It shares the general objectives of the mentioned Bachelor's degree programme within the area of German Literature.

The expected learning outcomes are:
1. Knowledge and understanding: A detailed knowledge of the German literature and history of the second half of the19th century and of the beginning 20th century (1871-1914);
2. Knowledge and understanding applied: The course will enhance the student's skills in textual translation and comprehension, in textual analysis, in understanding historical and cultural contexts, and in the acquisition of a critical language. Students are expected to become acquainted with language skills for Level B2/B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for the learning of languages (CEFR).
4. Making judgements: Ability to express a personal and original position on literary texts.
Students must have attended the classes of German Literature 1 and of German language 1 (LT0052) or have enough language sklills to read in German.
From Realism to Early Modernism

The course offers an overview, from a literay perspective, of the last decades of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century (1914).
A collection of extracts from the following works will be prepared:

Theodor Storm, Der Schimmelreiter; Schweigen.
Theodor Fontane: Effi Briest (estratto).
Gerhard Hauptmann: Bahnwärter Thiel.
Frank Wedekind: Frühlings Erwachen.
Hugo von Hofmannsthal: Ein Brief; a selection of poems.
Rainer M. Rilke: una scelta di poesie.
Thomas Mann: Der Tod in Venedig.
Arthur Schnitzler: Leutnant Gustl.
Heinrich Mann: Der Untertan.
Gottfried Benn: a selection of poems.
Kurt Pinthus: Menschheitsdämmerung (a selection of poems)
The examination consists of 3 parts: an exposition in German of a topic of your choice; reading and comprehension of a passage from the German texts; some questions on the course topics. In order to pass the examination, a sufficient mark must be obtained in each of the above three parts, which will be graded with points from 0 to 10 each. Sufficiency, i.e. 6 points, will be obtained with elementary competence and the absence of serious errors and gaps, and points 7 to 10 will be obtained according to the breadth of knowledge and the quality of argumentation and exposition.

Front lessons. The students’ active participation in class will be encouraged.

This course is the second module of the German Literature 2 course and is intended as a continuation of the first module taught by Prof. Fossaluzza in the first semester.
