PORTUGUESE AND BRAZILIAN LITERATURE 1 MOD. 1

The teaching is part of the characterising activities of the Iberian and Ibero-American Studies path of the master’s degree in European, American and Postcolonial Languages and Literatures and aims to deepen the knowledge on the Eduardo Lourenço’s texts.

1. Knowledge and understanding: to understand what heterodox thinking means for Eduardo Lourenço.

2. Applied knowledge and understanding: to understand how Eduardo Lourenço's heterodox thinking promotes a particular cultural critique of Portuguese culture and how literary criticism reinforces his heterodox thinking.

3. Autonomy of judgment: to develop the ability to choose adequate bibliography references and apply adequate concepts to create a critical thinking about Portuguese culture and literature.

4. Communication skills: to understand the presentation of an academic discourse: express concepts with clarity and terminological precision, such as, for example, being able to define ‘modernity’, ‘traditionalism’, ‘nationalism’ and so on.

5. Ability to learn: to recognize the typology of a text (philosophical, cultural or critical) and formulate analysis hypotheses; the facts and materials examined and the ideas in a context of which they are an expression.

Basic knowledge of American history and cultures.

The year 2023 marks the centenary of the birth of one of the most important Portuguese intellecuals of the twentieth century: Eduardo Lourenço. The course aims to study, in a broad way, the work of this intellectual in its multiple facets, namely: philosophy, cultural criticism and literary criticism. Based on original theoretical assumptions, Eduardo Lourenço made a revolution on the state of art in which literary studies were done, presenting new hermeneutic perspectives. The course will be divided into two parts: one dedicated to his philosophical and cultural thinking and the other that will seek to analyze literary criticism texts in more detail.

For present students: Seminar and oral examination. The students are invited do to prepare an oral presentation (30’), choosing one text of Eduardo Lourenço; analising it and promoting a debate. In this case, the oral exam will be a talk about the process of his or her Seminar.
