Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
Expected learning outcomes
Students will gain theoretical and applied knowledge of the English language as it is used in English-speaking countries (as L1 and L2) as well as lingua franca in communicative contexts that include everyday, academic and specialized contexts. Module 2 will focus on the structure of the verb phrase and its syntactic role in the clause.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
Students will be able to identify and describe the structure of the verb phrase and its syntactic role in the clause in texts in English produced for communicative contexts that include everyday, academic and specialized contexts.
Making judgements:
Students will be able to apply what they have learnt in the theoretical module to the analysis of texts in English produced for communicative contexts that include everyday, academic and specialized contexts.
Communication:
Students will be able to appropriately describe the aspects of the English language covered in the theoretical module. In so doing, they will demonstrate they have reached the B2 level of the CEFR.
Learning skills:
Students will be able to select appropriate bibliographical sources (printed and in digital form) to enhance their knowledge of the topics studied in the Professor's module as well as their linguistic competence. In the following academic year, students will take advantage of what they have learned in the English-Language-and-Translation-1 course to study the contents of the English-Language-and-Translation-2 course. Students will be able to self-assess their progress with respect to their metalinguistic and communicative competence in English.

1. Theoretical module 1 with Professor Giuseppe De Bonis (first semester);
2. Theoretical module 2 with Professor Francesca Coccetta (second semester);
3. Language practice labs ("esercitazioni") with the CEL (Dr. Barbara Pagotto) to develop their integrated language skills at a B2 level of the CEFR.
Title of Theoretical Module 2: "The English Verb Phrase"
The theoretical module will take into account the verb phrase, specifically its structure and syntactic role in the clause. Students will observe the use of the verb phrase in texts in English produced in everyday, academic and specialized communicative contexts. The module adopts a contrastive approach with the Italian language.

Assessment methods
The written exam regarding Module 2 (Professor Coccetta) is a structured test assessing the student's competence in the theoretical contents covered in the Module.
The oral exam regarding Module 2 (Professor Coccetta) will assess whether the student can describe one of the topics covered in Module 2 using the proper terminology. To take the oral exam, students are required to have successfully passed all the written exams.

- Professor De Bonis' Module is held in the first semester, while Professor Coccetta's Module in the second semester;
- the Module-2 materials will be available on Moodle;
- the language practice labs with Dr. Pagotto start in the first semester and end in May 2024.
The students who attended the course in the previous academic years should contact Professor De Bonis (giuseppe.debonis@unive.it) and Professor Coccetta (francesca.coccetta@unive.it) to agree on the contents of the exam.
Attendance is compulsory. To take the exam, students are required to attend 75% of the whole course (Module 1, Module 2 and language practice labs).
