The teaching is part of the characterizing activities of the Iberian and Ibero-American Studies course of the Master's Degree in European, American and Post-colonial Languages, Literatures and aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the Carnation Revolution and Portuguese postcolonialism through the analysis of two novels, Levantado do Chão, by José Saramago and Mapeador de Ausências, by Mia Couto.
1. Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of the formation of Portuguese and Mozambican literature; knowledge of the socio-cultural and historical-political dynamics that impact the works studied; mastery of scientific terminology for the critical analysis of literary texts.
2. Applied knowledge and understanding: highlight how the Carnation Revolution influences the postcolonial imagination of Portuguese and Mozambicans; read, analyze and interpret two works of Portuguese language literature in different contexts.
3. Independent judgement: develop the ability to acquire and apply adequate critical tools in the analysis of the indicated texts, on a thematic and stylistic-formal level, also by relating them to the context.
4. Communication skills: understanding the exposition of an academic speech; express concepts with clarity and terminological precision.
5. Ability to learn to recognize the typology of a text and formulate analytical hypotheses; the facts and materials examined and the ideas and context of which they are an expression.
Basic knowledge of 20th century history.
Il 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the Rivoluzione dei Garofani and this course is dedicated both to the understanding of the Portuguese historical political scenario and that of Mozambique across the analysis of two books, Levantado do Chão, by José Saramago and Mapeador de Ausências, by Mia Couto. The first work follows four generations of his existence made up of sacrifices and effort, but also of passions, aspirations, struggles, defeats and the end of the revolution; the story of Diogo Santiago is a prestigious and rispettato Mozambican intellectual and will become even later in his native land, in the city of Beira, on the watch of the cyclone that devastated him in 2019, even around Beira It's a return to all his childhood when Mozambique has been yet a Portoghese colony. A strict view will privilege the studio of resistant and postcolonial writing. In a first segment, the question regards myths, stereotypes, the construction of how the Portuguese national identity will be explored in depth. Through the analysis of selected tests, an illustration of the peculiarity of the author's writing and its contemporary work, which allows the articulation of a wide scope of thematic and linguistic innovation within a specific contest literary, social and cultural history in the Portuguese and in the Mozambique's context .

The exam is an oral interview on a written exercise previously carried out and delivered to the teacher by the last day of class. The written text must be done between 2 or 3 pages in doc. word, letter 12, space 1.5, on a point of the program of free choice. It must be a personal comment that is capable of intertwining the various points of the study. The interview is carried out at the same time as the written exercise previously delivered in order to verify the depth of the argument developed and its connection with the entire content of the course (debate, bibliography and lesson). The interview time is approximately 20'.
Evaluation Criteria:

The written paper is worth 30.0 as well as the oral exam (30.0). The grade corresponds to the sum of the written part of the oral exam for two.
Those students who take the exam in the winter session will have to submit the written work by the last day of lessons (December). Those who take the exam in the summer session (June - August) will have to submit (10) ten days before the exam date.
The criterion follows the idea of ​​clarity, conceptual definition, argumentation, synthesis and originality.
The key point of the written essay is to make a good argument in a synthetic way on the basic work of the course, using at least one critical text studied (on the moodle). See description in the syllabus (assessment).
