The course is among the basic training activities in the Master's Degree Programme in Intercultural Development of Tourism Systems. This didactic module, jointly with the one held by Prof. Stefano Soriani, is thereby part of the same course (12 cfu) with common objectives and learning outcomes.
The teaching objective is to transmit knowledge in order to develop the ability to analyse and interpret the tourism phenomenon in the various territorial systems, understanding its components and dynamics.
The objective of the module is to develop the ability to analyse and interpret the tourism phenomenon, also from a critical perspective, considering the environmental, socio-economic and historical-cultural potential in the various territorial contexts (urban, coastal, mountain, rural).
Through the perspective of the geography of tourism, the theoretical and methodological tools will be provided to deal with the issues of tourism development in terms of sustainability and to analyse the various tourism practices and narratives, on a local and global scale and also in a diachronic key. Emphasis will be placed on the effects of climate change in different tourist destinations and on the relationship between tourism, landscape, heritage and the role of communities.
1. Knowledge and understanding:
- To know the terminology and key themes of tourism geography.
- Appropriately use the main methodologies and geographical models applied to the tourism phenomenon

2. Applying knowledge and analysis:
- To be able to analyse and also critically describe the socio-spatial dynamics generated by tourism in different contexts and at different scales, with a focus on social, environmental and economic effects
- Being able to recognise stages and models of destination development with particular reference to the phenomenon of overtourism.
- To be able to describe networks of actors, mobility and tourism-recreational practices of destinations and to recognise their social and ethical implications for territories and communities

3. Ability to judge:
- To be able to recognise the economic, environmental and social drivers that may favour or hinder the sustainable development of different contexts
- Being able to highlight problems and critical issues generated by tourism

4. Communication skills:
- Being able to explain the acquired topics clearly and correctly
- Being able to apply concepts and terms from the geography of tourism coherently and appropriately in the analysis and interpretation of destinations
- Being able to interact with peers and the teacher, critically and respectfully, in presence and online
Basic knowledge of concepts and lexicon of tourism geography.
The course deals with the key themes of the geography of tourism applied to different territorial contexts with particular reference to sustainable development.
After an initial introductory part focusing on the theoretical discussion of the relationship between economic and political geography and tourism, the components of the tourism system and the different types of tourist destinations, the module will focus on what is meant by sustainable territorial development in its different declinations, economic, social and environmental.
Subsequently, the course will critically address the theme of climate changes, the relationship between landscape, tourism dynamics and local communities, and the processes of enhancing cultural and natural heritage, focusing on the role of practices and narratives in the definition and construction of destinations.
In continuity with the part of the course held by Prof. Soriani, this second module will be characterised by the analysis and discussion of concrete cases concerning both international and national contexts, including the city of Venice. Cultural, mountain, seaside, food&wine, outdoor, green and walking tourism will be investigated in their capacity to activate sustainable forms of tourism and considering future trends and tendencies.
