ENGLISH LANGUAGE (EXAM)

This is an upper intermediate level course. Students will study the English language specific to issues related to the development of tourism systems, current business trends and ethical considerations of new forms of tourism. Current events in their relevant aspects will be studied. The study of cultural intelligence related to the techniques of cross-cultural negotiation through role-play type simulations and the teaching of professional writing techniques will be included.

Students will learn how to present an innovative tourist product, discuss present-day trends and be aware of the impact of certain political and environmental events on today's tourism.

Required English level: B2.

Students will study texts (prepared before class) and video documents, for commentary and discussion.Topics will include :
Tourism and human rights, "Voluntourism" or volunteer tourism, disaster tourism ("Dark Tourism"), the importance of cultural intelligence or "CI" in negotiations, how to identify different markets, social classes of clients and locals, respect for religious and social customs of countries visited, sustainable tourism, and others. All topics will be covered interactively for comment and discussion. Also included will be the study of multicultural negotiation techniques, with emphasis on developing "cultural intelligence."

Material on Moodle: excerpts of recent articles and associated videos and documentaries.

The written exam consists in an essay answer on the course material, which will consist not only of restitution of the facts studied, but also of personal analysis or commentary. Students having participated in a cross-cultural negotiation role-play are exempt from the oral part of the exam, which will consist in a question on the course material. All others will take the oral.
The responses will be evaluated according to the following criteria : coherence, grammatical fluency and logical structure.
Non-attending students: The syllabus is identical, but non-attending students are strongly encouraged to meet with me for an office hour session, either online or in-person, to allow for appropriate follow-up of their work.

Analysis of material, oral participation through spontaneous discussion and role play simulations of organized cross-cultural negotiations, and professional writing practice. Texts should be prepared before class to encourage free discussion.

This being a language course, attendance is highly recommended. A course in language practice is also offered in parallel, the attendance of which is also strongly recommended.
