The course is aimed at students who are pursuing a master's degree in Cultural Anthropology, Ethnology and Ethnolinguistics, or those who, while coming from other disciplines, are interested in the critical tools offered by the discipline and its application in relation to the study of the relationship between civil society, development projects and the state, as well as between humans and nature. The overall teaching objective is to provide students with the analytical tools necessary to pursue ethnographic analyses of contexts characterized by environmental struggles and conflicts.
1. Knowledge and understanding
Through the analysis of specific case studies, students will acquire the ability to analyze cases of environmental conflict from an ethnographic perspective.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Acquisition of the basic tools to apply the ethnographic method to the observation of environmental development processes.
3. Critical skills
Critical judgment skills in the analysis of applied and environmental anthropology texts.
4. Communication skills
Through group exercises conducted during the course, the student will deepen his or her public speech skills.
5. Learning skills
Through the group exercises carried out during the course, and the writing of the final paper, the student will deepen his or her critical and independent research skills.
It is suggested that students take the applied anthropology course only after they have given and taken at least two of the core exams in the ACEL degree program.
Several case studies will be considered during the course, enabling students to acquire the theoretical and methodological tools to analyze situations characterized by environmental conflicts. A complete list of articles will be provided during the first class.
