Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
The Mathematics for Art and Economics course is a compulsory course for the “Curriculum: Economics and Management of Arts and Cultural Activities” and it is the only course of quantitative area for this Curriculum.
The main objective is to make the student familiar with the logical-mathematical language and to provide as the basics of Calculus. Both are important analytical tools for addressing the economic and management courses of the “Curriculum: Economics and Management of Arts and Cultural Activities”. The course also aims to let students explore some of the relationships between art and mathematics.
Expected learning outcomes
The course enables students to acquire basic knowledge and computational skills in the study of mathematical functions and to apply those concepts to formulate and solve some economic problems. The students will have the chance to understand the concept of "golden section" and some of its uses in the artistic field.
Details:
Knowledge and understanding skills: understanding the meaning of the concepts of function, derivative, limit, elasticity; knowledge and understanding of the main calculation techniques for variable functions; understanding of the concept of optimization and its applications to economic problems. knowledge and understanding of the concept of the golden section.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: to be able to solve equations, inequalities and systems of equations; to be able to compute derivatives and simple limits; ability to solve simple optimization problems in one variable.
Pre-requirements
During the course it is assumed that students already know some mathematical topics covered in secondary school courses, in particular: set theory, set membership, set operations, Venn diagrams, real numbers, integer powers, properties of power, algebraic rules, factoring, fractions, correct way of symplifying fractions, fractional powers, inequalities, signs diagrams, how to solve simple linear or quadratic equations, cartesian coordinates, concept of function of one variable, domain, range, graph , properties of functions: one-to-one functions, onto functions, bijective functions, linear functions and straight lines, slope of a straight line, quadratic functions and parabolas, vertex of a parabola.
However, some elements of elementary mathematics will be included in the course (chapter 0 of the textbook is devoted to this subject). Assessment methods
The written exam consists of 4 exercises (duration 50 minutes). They are open-ended exercises. A fifth optional question, if the exam isn't a online written exam, ( duration 10 minutes) concerns the subjects covered in the book 'the Golden Section in Mathematics and Art' and allows those who also answer this question to increase the score of the written test.
In the written exam only the use of your pen is allowed, instead electronic tools, notes or books are not allowed.
Registration for the written tests is mandatory.
The precise form of the final written exam will depend on the health situation and on the disposition of the national authority at the time. Detailed instructions will be given by the instructor in time to prepare for the exam.
Teaching methods
The course consists of 30 hours of lectures held by the teacher and 10 hours of exercises held by an exerciser who will propose additional exercises on the topics covered in the lesson.
During the course, if it is possible, one or more seminars will be organized on the subject of mathematics and art.
Through the use of the MyMathlab platform for online learning of mathematics associated with the textbook, students can practice further and deepen the topics covered during the course. Students are required to register for the course on the Moodle platform.
Depending on the health situation, updates concerning the activities and their scheduling will be made available on the Moodle platform (moodle.unive.it) and on the personal pages of the instructors.
