ART HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL VENETO

The course aims to offer in-depth knowledge on a theme that will allow us to address more aspects of medieval art (architecture, sculpture, mosaic and pictorial decoration). The course is one of the characteristics of the "Medieval and Byzantine" path and can be chosen in combination with MEDIEVAL ICONOGRAPHY AND ICONOLOGY SP. (FM 308) or with BYZANTINE ART HISTORY SP. (FM0210). between the Related and Integrative paths of the "Medieval and Byzantine" and "Modern" paths.

Getting to know medieval works and contexts of the Veneto area, placing them within a wider perspective - even historical -. Knowing how to describe, analyze the architecture and decorations (sculptures, furnishings, paintings) reconstructing their phases, interpreting their peculiarities, cultural relationships, chronological and cultural placement. Acquire autonomy in directing research on a topic / object relevant to the topic of the course (agreed and guided by the teacher). Acquire communication skills in presenting one's research in a seminar setting. Acquire research skills in order to write a scientific text.

Having taken the exam of Medieval Art History is preferable but not essential.

CATHEDRALS.
The course aims to tackle the study of some important buildings, central to consider medieval religious art under various aspects: the architecture, the connected sculpture (architectural and furnishing), the pictorial and / or mosaic decoration, the complex in which they are inserted (episcopal quarters).
Some examples of the Veneto area will be analyzed: the complex of Concordia Sagittaria, the Basilica of Santa Eufemia in Grado (seat of the Patriarch), the cathedrals of Torcello, Caorle, Jesolo, Venice (San Pietro di Castello), Vicenza and Verona.

The bibliography will be provided to students at the beginning of the course (first lesson).

Students are invited to present a topic for individual study in the final seminar. The topic exposed will be the subject of the written report to be submitted 1 week before the oral exam. The report will be discussed during the oral exam. The assessment will therefore take into account both the presentation in the classroom and the written report. The maximum evaluation will be given to works of particular originality, the subject of critical in-depth studies, exhibited with properties, presented in an edited written form, with a mature argumentative structure. A good evaluation will take into account the work carried out, the exhibition and the final draft, recognizing the elements acquired.

The course will be divided into two blocks. In the first block (III period of the didactic calendar) frontal lessons will be held by the teacher, making useful materials (literature and powerpoint) available from time to time on the MOODLE platform.
Halfway through the course, a list of possible topics for individual study will be proposed, which will have to be presented in the final seminar. Visits and inspections will be organized during the IV period. In the same period, other lectures by the teacher will be held and the seminar reports of the students will be organised, hopefully to be held over 1 or 2 days.

Attendance of the course is recommended. Students who cannot attend will have to agree on the program with the teacher at the reception. Bibliographies will not be provided by e-mail without an interview.
