Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
The course contributes to an advanced understanding and to the development of analytical and critical skills of social phenomena such as the intertwining of migrations, inequalities between nations and continents, social classes and genders, migration and social policies.
The theoretical and analytical tools provided in the course, which draw on social sciences and, in particular, sociology and social anthropology, are useful for addressing the topics covered by the course and can be further applied to the study of social transformations.
Expected learning outcomes
- possess an overview of the familiarization phenomena of immigration in Europe and Italy, of the social, political and cultural processes related to it;
- deepen its conceptual tools for the study of international migration and the processes of engendering migration, as well as elaborated by the most advanced and recent studies;
- know the specific terminology, the main research themes and problems of the field of study relating to immigrant families, in migration, through migration, social construction and gender transformations in migration.
- are able to work with the concepts and paradigms necessary for the understanding of past and present transformations related to international migration;
- are familiar with the different configurations of family and gender migration in Italy, Europe and the world
- are aware of the role of (social, employment and migration) policies in defining immigrant individuals, families and populations within the international division of labor;
- know how to deconstruct social representations and stereotypes relating to the status of individuals, families and immigrant populations
- know how to critically analyze theories and policy discourses that stereotype and explain inequalities as based on racial, national, cultural and religious factors;
- are able to present orally and discuss the main theoretical and empirical problems related to the processes of familiarization of migration, gender differences and inequalities;
- know how to analyze in written form a specific problem related to gender and migration based on the main theoretical approaches and empirical results of the research;
- know how to formulate the contents of the course in a clear and reasoned way, know how to correctly use current terminology in the field of migration and intercultural relations, know how to build examples to support or refute a hypothesis of analysis;
- they are able to collect information, provide analyzes and interpretations by applying the acquired knowledge, providing relevant examples, also independently built.

The course begins with a brief historical reconstruction of female migration that puts the current debate on the feminization of migration in perspective.
He then critically discusses the theory of care chains, family reunification, gender transformations in migration. Finally, the course addresses the impact of the different forms and contexts of migration on the relationships and inequalities of race, nationality, gender, class and generation.

ALL STUDENTS must draw up and present to the class an essay on the topics of the course (the professor will support the students in drafting the essay) OR a paper on a novel, related to the topics of the course (for example, see the section below).
IN ADDITION, they will have to carry out an exercise and participate in the discussion on the basis of the films seen in class.
NON ATTENDING STUDENTS must draw up an essay as explained above, and taking into account of the strongly suggested following bibliography:

Assessment methods
- active participation in classroom work and thematic seminars (and classroom active discussion after the vision of films and/or documentaries);
- individual and group presentations and discussions;
- presentation of an essay on the topics of the course (the professor is available to follow the student in drafting the essay); OR a paper of sociological analysis of a novel, relating to the topics of the course (some example of novels: Ali, M. "Brick Lane"; Kureishi, H. "The Buddha of Suburbia"; Smith, Z . "White teeth"; Adichie, CN "Americanah"; Varesi, V. "Il paese di Saimir"; Geda, F. - participation in discussions on the films seen in class and drafting of related exercises.

The assessment of the written and oral tests focuses on:
- clarity, relevance, validity of the analysis and proposals;
- ability to rework in the analysis and design of the concepts and theories discussed in the course;
- argumentative ability;
- clarity of presentation and adequacy of language;
- Quality of reflection on the limits and problems of the policies analyzed and of the proposed interventions.
