The course will be based on current Anglo-Saxon interpretations of classical philosophers (e.g., how Anglo-Saxons read Dante, Aristotle's political theories related to modern issues, etc.), the study of contemporary Anglo-Saxon philosophers (e.g., Fukuyama and Chomsky) and today's philosophical issues (e.g., ethics, questions of culture and identity, and others, time and preferences permitting).
The pedagogical goals of the course consist in improving students' ability to read, write about, and debate philosophical topics in English.
Minimum level: B2 CEFR as specified in the university regulations concerning admittance to the magistrale.
Study of texts and accompanying video material, free discussion, organized debates and essay writing techniques.
Material on Moodle: excerpts of recent articles and video documents.
The written exam consists in an essay answer on the course material, which will consist not only of restitution of the facts studied, but also of personal analysis or commentary. Students having participated in an "Agora in Athens" style debate are exempt from the oral part of the exam, which will consist in a question on the course material. All others will take the oral.
The responses will be evaluated according to the following criteria : coherence, grammatical fluency and logical structure.
Non-attending students: The syllabus is identical, but non-attending students are strongly encouraged to meet with me for an office hour session, either online or in-person, to allow for appropriate follow-up of their work.
Students are to prepare each text before coming to class in order to facilitate direct discussion and debate. Oral participation is free and encouraged. Debates will be organized by group. The material will be analyzed and discussed in class. Voluntary essay practice will also be offered.
