The course is part (1) of the core educational activities of the Bachelor's Degree in Sustainable Chemistry and Technology and it allows the students to acquire the basic knowledge and the understanding of some aspects concerning the Physical Chemistry.
This Course aims to provide theoretical basic elements of Chemical Thermodynamics (also Statistics), including some essential principles of the atomic-molecular level. The students will learn to apply such a knowledge to simple chemical problems, mainly about phase or reaction equilibria.
The study of thermodynamics is necesary not onlly to understand some general natural laws, but also to learn how to develop a logical sceintific reasoning.
The training objectives are to provide the basis for understanding the equilibrium between different phases and and equilibrium of a reaction. The teaching will focus mainly on problem solving and exercises with the aim of contextualizing the concepts learned in the theoretical part of the course, concepts that from experience are difficult to process the first time they are encountered if approached in a formal way only.
1. Knowledge and understanding
To know and to be familiar with:
a) the properties and the state functions of a system.
b) the correspondence among the state functions.
c) chemical equilibria.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Ability to use state functions such as Internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs energy in order to define a system. To calculate some chemical physics quantities of real systems.
To explain chemical equilibria in terms of thermodynamics.

3. Judgment skills
Ability to evaluate, in a reasoned manner, experimental results associated to surfaces or colloidal systems.

4. Communication skills
To use in an appropriate way the terminology and the symbolism learnt during the course.
To interact with the teachers and the classmates in a dynamic, effective and proper way,

5. Learning ability
To take notes during classes in a proper way, evidencing the topics according to their importance

It is necessary for the students to know the theoretical foundations and basic applications of the differential and integral calculus, the kinematics, the dynamics and general chemistry.
In relation to the training objectives and expected learning outcomes given in the relevant sections, the course contents can be summarized as follows:

The properties of gases. The first principle: work, heat, energy, enthalpy. Thermochemistry. Second and third principles: entropy and absolute temperature, thermodynamic equilibrium. Pure substances: chemical potential, fugacity, transitions and phase equilibria. Mixtures: partial molar quantities, ideal and real solutions, activity. Reactive mixtures: chemical equilibrium and equilibrium constants. Hints at statisitic thermodynamics.

Verification of learning is through a written test sufficient on five exercises selected from those done in class. The objective of this test is to verify that the student has acquired the concepts during the lectures. The duration of this test is two hours where only the use of the calculator ( no smatphone) and the material provided by the lecturer ( tables of thermodynamic constants, periodic table and formulary) is allowed.
The written test will contain 5 exercises each of which will have a "value" depending on complexity and length. Each exercise may be partially graded. The sum of the values will be 33 points.
The grade will correspond to the sum obtained on the 5 exercises. If the sum is 30 or 31 the grade will be 30/30 If the sum is 32 or 33 the grade will be 30 cum laude /30
Teaching will be provided through lectures. and supplemented by a course of exercises
