The course aims to provide adequate knowledge of the procedures of the main artistic techniques, based on cognitive data obtainable from sources and data from technical and scientific investigations. Particular attention will be given to the techniques of painting on wall, panel and canvas: from the support, preparation methods, drawing techniques, to the use of binders and colors, concluding with the elements of finishing and painting. The study of techniques will be investigated as a foundation for planning any conservation intervention, especially in terms of preventive and planned conservation. Quality levels for the curated management of museum collections will therefore be the subject of teaching.
Case studies on the opportunities of diagnostics applied to cultural heritage may be discussed.

- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the periodization of art techniques and the most relevant historiographical sources.
- Know how to comment on the subject of art artifacts using technical and scientific terminology suitable for interdisciplinary and international dialogue;
- Know the standards of collection management and care and place them in proper relation to performance techniques;
- Know and be able to use the main national and international databases to acquire first elements on artistic techniques
- Be able to develop, with judgment and critical distance, cross-cutting arguments on the basis of the material studied.

No specific prerequisites are required.
The course will present drawing techniques and procedures for translating preparatory drawings to different media. Historiographical sources and case studies on the development of artistic techniques, particularly from the 14th to the 18th century, related to mural, panel and canvas painting will be analyzed. Fundamentals will also be provided on sculpture processes (in marble, bronze and wood) and major printmaking techniques. Particular attention will be paid to binders and finishing and painting techniques in order to convey an understanding of the usefulness of diagnostics for the analysis of deterioration phenomena, particularly in indoor.
