This course addresses the opportunities and challenges facing enterprises that operate in the global context and focused on Chinese Economy.

Main objectives are: to learn and to apply analytical frameworks to assess institutional, cultural, and economic differences across countries and to evaluate management's strategic alternatives. The cases presented describe an ample variety of international economies, focusing on emerging countries, and both established enterprises and start-up, multinational companies, midsize firms and entrepreneurial organizations across multiple industries.
In global economy, managers must understand the firm's direction, policies, and goals and develop a knowledge on how to design structures and processes and to manage employees.
The course focuses on organization design and human resources management coherent with China's economic, cultural, institutional and social specificities.
The course provides in-depth country comparisons and offers skills for successfully working overseas in both multinational companies, small and medium size enterprises and entrepreneurial and start-up organizations. The course is designed with lectures, case analyses, experiential exercises, video film discussions, and possible guest speakers. The course covers a range of learning opportunities, including lectures, cases, video film discussions, group projects, and experiential exercises.
Class time will be spent on lectures, discussion of current business situations, experiential exercises, and discussion of assigned reading materials, visiting speakers (faculty and executives), viewing films, and student presentations. The class is meant to be an opportunities to discuss, debate, confront ideas and support opinions with facts and examples.
The strong focus on Chinese economy helps to complete the managerial set of competences and to start an international career in global companies. Moreover the emphasis on people management support the students' development process.
No previous managerial knowledge is required.
The course focuses on organization design and human resources management coherent with China's specificities . It considers the activities of multinational firms and government policies toward them, drawing policy implications for the management of these enterprises. The course surveys theories of organization design, human resources management, organization behavior.

The contents of this program are developed along these lines:
- historical events related to the field of HRM, including the theory and philosophy of human resource development; the differences between learning and performance paradigm; different methods for employee development to improve individual and business performance
- major challenges facing HRM? and, explore ways in which business leaders are addressing human resource dilemmas and how the strategic HRM is emerging as a significant business imperative in the global business landscape

Main topics are:
- The contexts of human resource management: organizational, institutional and legal environments
- Staffing: recruiting, selecting and managing downsizing and outplacement
- Employee Development: individual and collective performances and learning processes.
- Compensation: rewarding and careers systems and policies.
- Developing Employee relationship, HR branding strategies and international HR challenges

This is a fast pace and high demanding course; I highly suggest to schedule and strictly follow a plan for your reading, study and group sessions. (Do not fall behind in your readings) Regular reading of the Economist, Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times will be help your learning.
The exam consists of 4 open-ended questions, in written form, without books, notes, or other aids. The exam lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The evaluation of final exam will be based on the understanding and command of the subject, on the capability to apply the concepts and framework showing comprehension of main topics of both organization design and human resources management in international firms. The factors of evaluation are: Mastery of the topics and analytical models; ability to connect themes; understanding and ability to articulate an analytical approach; completeness and depth of presentation.

It is suggested that students actively participate in the course. Students attending all classes must be ready discuss the readings. The format of this class is highly interactive. We will explore how International HRM unfolds in practice, and how managerial skills affect the HR performances.
Short assignments must be handed in during class. They are designed to facilitate class discussion and learning. Further details about the assignments will be given in class.
Class participation. Your contribution to the enhanced learning of the class will be evaluated. We expect everyone to come to every class having done the readings and having formulated questions about the readings. The questions have to facilitate the "learning community" spirit as much as knowledge gained from the readings. Students enrolled in the course will receive two weeks from the start a list of readings to study before.
