The course plans to provide a wide, multi-perspective understanding about the concept of sustainability and what the term means in the current environmental context. The pressing deterioration of ecosystems and climate change, causing social and economic distress, is connected to the excessive use of fossil resources and generation of waste, that, on the other hand, allowed the development of modern societies and the improvement of living standards. The delicate interconnections along the cause-effect chains have to be carefully acknowledged and analyzed by means of feasible methods and appropriate indicators, in order to gain a multi-criteria, holistic point of view.
