The discipline belongs to the core educational activities of the Master’s Degree Programme in History from the Middle Ages to Present. The course intends to prepare students to specialize in European (and extra-European) history through the first-hand analysis of sources and secondary literature.
The course will allow students to understand better how the Papacy will consolidate itself between the late Middle Ages and the early modern period.
Good knowledge of European History, with a particular focus on the medieval and early modern period. A profound knowledge of Italian is also required: I therefore recommend to study thoroughly a good grammar textbook; about the Italian punctuation system I recommend: B. Mortara Garavelli, Prontuario di punteggiatura, Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2007. To study the Counterreformation period, it is highly useful to know Latin.
The course intends to reconstruct the historical developments of the Papacy between the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. In particular, it will analyze, on the one hand, the theological discourse on the papal supremacy and, on the other, the ways in which such an authority - allegedly absolute and divine - could be exercised in the early modern period.
A reference list of books will be made available on moodle.
The students who attend classes are required to carry out a first-hand research on archival material and/or on old books.
During the course they will hold an oral presentation about their case-study; at the time of the exam, they are required to present an essay on the same topic.

Students who can't attend the course have to do an oral exam based on the discussion of texts agreed with the teacher.
