LAB - Environmental diplomacy

The course will give students theoretical and practical tools to understand the contents and processes of environmental cooperation. In particular, the course will provide: i) the basics of environmental agreements and cooperation theory ii) an overview of the history, process, key principles and actors of current environmental and climate negotiations within the UN framework, iii) knowledge of the linkages between science and diplomacy. Classroom experiments, role-play and interactive simulation activities will complement lessons to train students with practical learning about the process and social dynamics of negotiations.

The course is in line with the objectives of the PhD and Master Programmes in Science and Management of Climate Change, and will contribute to achieve them. It will equip students with tools to interpret key issues in the international environmental negotiations; identify negotiating Parties and groups, as well as their interests and negotiation positions; achieve policy impact with science evidence; apply decision-making tools and evaluate international climate policy outcomes.
