SOCIOLOGY

The course presents the sociological debate and explains to the differences between sociological imagination and sociology as science.
The course will present the most important sociological theories and their developments
It will be analysed the most important concepts used to understand the links between economy and society.

At the end of the course the students
Know the most important sociological theories and their evolutions
know the sociological concepts and be able to analyze the characteristics of contemporary society
know the evolution of sociological concepts
use sources and to follow the sociological debate to understand social issues

The course is at base level. The student doesn’t need of specific sociological knowledge

Introduction on sociology and on sociological method
Macro sociology (functionalistic and neo-functionalist theory; conflict theory)
Micro sociology (ritualism, material and symbolic exchange; social actor theory)
Micro and macro theories integration
The current debate

The verification will be focused about the understanding of sociological theories. Attending students can present a short paper about the contribution of contemporary scholars

The most part of this course is focused on presentation of theoretical sociological debate and on the students involvement about the criticism of the authors thought.
The students will have a very active role in the last part of this course. Every student have to analyse web debate about one issue of contemporary society (globalisation, risk society, individualism and cooperation attitude; society and economy embeddedness). Every one have to choose the contribution of a current scholar and produce a critical paper about his thought
