The course is part of the study path through an in-depth reflection on the argumentative methods that characterize applied ethics, through the study of their genesis and through the analysis of the issues that are the main subjects of their debate.
Upon the completion of the course students will be able to (Dublin descriptors):

1) Know and understand the strong bond between social ethics and bioethics, in addition to the essential features of the most significant moral theories, also in its practical implications;

2) Apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the course in morally conflictual contexts;

3) Make critical judgements on the main issues of the course and justify, by means of critical reason, possible solutions to moral conflicts;

4) Comunicate accurately and in a personal way the contents of the course, using the specific language.

5) Continue the path begun during the course indipendently, by means of the course material and the bibliographical references,
There are no specific requirements for course attendance.
The first part of the course will be dedicated to identifying the reasons that led to the birth of bioethics, to the narration of the history of this discipline and to the description of its argumentative methods. The second part of the course, on the other hand, will critically examine some specific bioethical problems of an applicative nature, such as those relating to medical interventions in the beginning-of-life and end-of-life fields.

Students are required to take a written exam which has to be completed in 2 hours in order to verify learning. The test is composed by three open-ended questions, which allow to give a free-form answer.
