ART, PHOTOGRAPHY & A/V LAB

The lab is delivered in the frame of the MA History of the Arts and Conservation of Cultural Heritage and it is part of the pedagogical offer reserved to IMACS (International Master in Cinema Studies) students. Although it is mainly reserved to students of the MA History of the Arts and IMACS, the lab is also open to students of other Degree Courses interested in participating, who can send their application (for enrollment procedures, see the "contents" section).

Upon successful completion of the module, students will be provided with the necessary toolkit to: understand a photographic and audiovisual project in terms of both content, and technical and formal features; learn about the roles and professional skills required to work in various positions within the art, photography and audiovisual fields (i.e. art studio, museum, gallery, archive, etc); learn to appropriately present about, promote and foster the conservation of photographic and audiovisual pieces.

No preliminary skills are required, though some historical, critical and technical knowledge concerning contemporary visual arts, photography and audiovisual media may facilitate the students. Moreover, (inter-) personal skills such as analytical thinking, synthesis, accuracy, good organisation, communication, the ability to work in a team and some flexibility will make the module easier to follow and successfully complete.

This lab is an interdisciplinary module focussing on visual arts, photography and audiovisual media; to attend to this interdisciplinary nature, the module is co-taught by proff. Baldacci, De Rosa and Dalla Gassa. The lab provides the students with methodological skills regarding: the production of a photographic and audiovisual project (from the pitch to the hands-on production process); the curatorship and setup design of a photographic and audiovisual exhibition (from fundraising to display strategies); the acquisition and loan of photographic and audiovisual pieces (logistics); the dissemination (press office and communication strategy); the cataloguing and conservation (as in archives and collections); the promotion and selling strategies (as in galleries). These aspects are covered through classes held by professionals of the art and media sectors.
The module allows the attending students to earn 6 extra-curricular CFU. Because of its lab structure, the module is capped. Interested students are therefore requested to send, by January 10th, 2023, an expression of interest alongside their CV (1 page max.) and a brief motivation letter (1000 characters max.) to cristina.baldacci@unive.it in an email titled: CALL LABORATORIO AFA. The selection process will be finalised by January 20th 2023 and the selected students will receive a confirmation email. Enrollment will be automatic and upon this passage the module will appear in the study plan.

Students are expected to produce a group work taking the shape of an independent publication and to be presented at the end of the lab. The output of the project work will be assessed on the basis of a variety of elements: the individual input from each student to the group work; the overall project work outcome; the final presentation.

The lab comprises a series of guest lectures and some work group sessions guided by the lecturers and the tutor. As for the guest lectures, these will be delivered by professionals working for and collaborating with the most important art institutions in Venice. They aim at providing a close account around art-making, conservation, cataloguing, promotion and circulation processes. Key issues such as curatorship, setup, exhibition strategies, the relationship between art/photography/audiovisual pieces and the exhibition space, the features of photographic and moving image-based pieces will be addressed specifically. As for the group work sessions, these will aim at developing a working method considering: the perceptive nature of art, photography and audiovisual projects; the relationships between projects and author; the spatial dimension with reference to both the conservation, exhibition and circulation of art, photography and audiovisual projects; the spectators/visitors grasped in their various clusters.
