In the CDS in Conservation Science and Technology for Cultural Heritage it is framed as an in-depth study of the applicative issues of one of the oldest sectors of chemistry and in general of all the human activities, that is the production and the use of coloring substances. In this context, the in-depth study of the issues relating to the application of pigments and dyes in materials for cultural heritage will be parallel to that of their synthesis. This is therefore of interest to the student, as he can deepen the application part of his course of study, relative to the knowledge of the basic methodologies in the preparation of paint products, plastics, fibers and in general all the materials that are normally used in cultural heritage both in their preparation from scratch and in the restoration of pre-existing assets. The study of the preparation of traditional materials will be compared with that of modern production of pigments and dyes and will highlight the new trends in high-performance materials that take into account Efficiency, Ecology and Economy. This is in a context where traditional materials applied in cultural heritage are accompanied and sometimes replaced by new and industrial ones. Color as an essential part in the conservation of cultural heritage and therefore the importance in determining the original shades requires a thorough knowledge of the industrial coloring materials that have characterized this past century with a view to the conservation of contemporary cultural heritage.
1. Knowledge and understanding
a) Basic knowledge of light, color and measurement systems.
b) Knowing the differences between pigments, dyes and their classification.
c) Knowing traditional, natural and synthetic dyes and pigments and their application.
d) Knowing the synthesis of the main types of industrial pigments and dyes.
e) Knowing the main types of paint products, fiber dyeing and plastics.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Dyeing of a fiber or preparation of a varnish
3. Judgment skills
Recognize where a type of pigment or dye can be applied
4. Communication skills

Students are advised to attend General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry courses.
- Stimulus, vision, light and its measurement, basic colorimetric spectroscopy, Munsell and CIE system.
- Natural dyes and pigments and their preparation and application.
-Colorants: classification, nomenclature and industrial production. Examples of dyes: acids, basic, direct, dispersed, reactive, fluorescent, etc.
- Pigments: classification and industrial production of organic and inorganic pigments. Examples of pigments: white, black, colored, metallic, pearlescent,? Glitters? and their applications.
- Paints, paints, inks and coatings with concepts on the types of application.
