Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
The aim of the course is to provide students with the fundamental notions on safety in physical, chemical and biological laboratories. The course intends to establish in students a mentality oriented towards their safety, through the method of evaluation of danger and risk. During the course I analyze the main sources of danger in the laboratories and the main preventive and first-aid measures are described.
A part of the course is delivered online.
Expected learning outcomes
a) students are expected to know the fundamental legislation on the safety of Italian work, and have understood the application to the risks of the chemical laboratory.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
a) students must know the personal and collective protection devices to be used in the various possible chemical processes;
b) students must know the various safety procedures to be used in the various possible chemical processes;
3. Judgment capacity
a) students must be able to recognize dangerous situations and apply working methods and protection tools able to guarantee safety in various contexts.
4. Communication skills
a) students must be able to interpret written and oral safety instructions;
b) students must demonstrate communication skills in the correct technical terms on security issues.
5. Learning skills
a) students must know how and where to find and consult documents and legislation concerning chemical risk (safety data sheets, IARC lists, etc.).
Pre-requirements
In order to take the test at the end of the Specific Training Course (lasting 16 hours) it is necessary for the student to have completed the General Training Course and passed the relative test.
Contents
Prevention and First Intervention.
Hazard analysis:
- physical (severe fall, sharp objects, electric shocks, radiation, heat, cold, etc.);
- chemicals (fire, explosion, contamination);
- biological (contamination).
Fire prevention means.
First aid.
Emergency and evacuation plans.
Poster design, Risk phrases (Hazard), Safety phrases (Precautionary).
Safety data sheets.
Incompatible substances.
Disposal of chemical or biological waste.

Assessment methods
Mandatory conditions for access to the written test are:
1) the presence of at least 14 out of 16 lessons;
2) have completed the 4-hour General Training Course online and passed the relative test.
The written test consists of a test consisting of 20 multiple choice questions concerning the entire program carried out (see the contents section), aimed at ascertaining the knowledge and ability to interpret safety issues. During the one-hour written test, the use of books, notes and electronic media is permitted. The written test is considered passed with at least 14 correct answers.
Failure to pass the written test entails the compulsory attendance of a new course SAFETY AND HEALTH IN EDUCATIONAL AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES.

IMPORTANT!
Classes are compulsory: the loss of more than two hours of lessons implies the cancellation of the entire course.
It is not possible to access the educational laboratories, without a certificate of attendance and preparation of this course.
