The course focuses on the main concepts relating to environmental issues affecting tourism, in order to improve students’ expertise in analyzing and explaining territorial complexity.
This didactic module, jointly with the one held by Prof. Francesco Vallerani, is thereby part of the same course (12 cfu) with common learning outcomes.
The aim of the module is to develop the ability to analyse and interpret the tourism phenomenon, grasping the specificities related to the dynamics and social and environmental processes of tourism, through the lens of the Geography of Tourism.
To this end, the theoretical and methodological tools will be provided to analyse the discourses on tourism and tourist practices in a critical key, with a diachronic look, both at the local and global scale. Emphasis will also be placed on the analysis of the dynamics of tourism development in terms of social and environmental sustainability.
1. Knowledge and understanding:
1.1 Use of the geographical terminology related to tourism
1.2 Knowledge of the main themes, problems and authors of contemporary tourism geography
1.3 Knowledge of the main geographical methodologies, also through the observation and analysis of case studies.

2. Applying knowledge and analysis:
2.1 Being able to recognize, through a critical approach, the different ways by which tourism development dynamics impact on territorial configurations, on landscape and on environmental quality of places
2.2 Being able to recognize the ethic and social implications involved in tourism development

3. Ability to judge:
3.1 Being aware of what “tourism sustainability” means and of the economic, environmental and socio-cultural factors involved in its implementation
3.2 Being able to identify the ethical and social issues involved in tourism development

4. Communication skills:
4.1. Ability to argue and adequately and critically explain the acquired knowledge.
Basic knowledge of lexicon and concepts of tourism geography.
Once the history of tourism and its evolution have been framed, a focus will follow on the main theoretical tools of the geography of tourism from the point of human, economic and political geography. A specific focus will be on sustainable tourism in its various theoretical and practical forms, focusing on what is meant by sustainable territorial development. Finally, tourism will be discussed in the context of globalization, looking at the multiple relationships between tourism and mobility. The entire course includes an accompaniment of the theoretical aspects with the presentation of case studies.

The assessment consists of a written test with open questions relating to the topics covered. The questions will focus on the reference texts (and on the notes for attending students). The test has a duration of 90 minutes (2 academic hours).
The acquired knowledge, argumentative ability and presentation skills will be evaluated.

Lectures with discussion and seminars, possibility of workshops.
