The course is among the obligatory degree courses in the Intercultural Development of Tourism Systems programme. It aims to provide students with theoretical concepts, models and tools to understand the systematic nature of tourism. On this basis, the course will define the theoretical framework, review the most recent scientific literature, and in particular look at their implications in terms of analyzing the tourism supply and consumer's role in this context. The course will provide students with foundations for the construction of integration strategies between tourist hospitality companies and the complementary services sector, such as cultural and environmental services, the promo-marketing of new tourism products, and the use of ICT for the development of destination tourism systems. The course proceeds to outline the most important consequences in terms of management and governance of a destination. These topics will then be completed and complemented by the second part of the course.
1. Knowledge and understanding
• To know and represent the strategic and systemic relations of a tourist destination through theoretical models
• Understanding new approaches and visions useful for deciphering the dynamics of tourism supply and consumption
• Understand the reasons behind strategies for integrating the tourist offer and the intersectoral development of a tourist destination
2. Apply the knowledge and understanding acquired
• Knowing how to recognize and analyze the relationships between the actors of the tourism systems that co-participate in tourism supply and consumption
• Knowing how to identify the economic characteristics and development potential of tourism systems
• Knowing how to use the tools and strategies useful for the management of tourism products and services, including in relation to globalization processes
• Knowing how to identify lines of intervention to support the integration of tourism, including through the use of ICT
3. Sound judgment
• To associate economic theories with certain tourism development strategies
• Being able to critically evaluate the aptitude of a destination in the management of its tourism products and services in order to pursue a competitive, intercultural and sustainable tourism
development.

Inter-organizational forms and contracts
Models of integration of the tourist offer
Cross-sector interventions strategies for the qualification of the tourist offer and the promotion of new tourism products;
The role of ICT in the development of tourism systems
Compulsory literature:
1) The course text book is N Vanhove 'The Economics of Tourism Destinations' (most recent edition)
2) other materials (slides and articles) published on the MOODLE e-learning platform
Attending students: group work regarding a current issue in tourism chosen at the beginning of the course

Non-attending students:
Written exam consisting of 2 open questions aimed at examining the understanding of the topics covered in the textbook of the course and the materials published on Moodle.
The course is organized as follows:
a) theoretical lectures
b) discussion of case studies in the form of a working group
c) discussion of papers presented during lectures
The teaching materials will be available on the Moodle platform, published with the respective topics of the class and accompanied by an introduction that will helps students to understanding the course syllabus.
