The teaching is part of the characterizing activities of the Iberian and Ibero-American Studies path of the master’s degree in European, American and Postcolonial Languages and Literatures and aims to deepen the knowledge on the Darcy Ribeiro’s narratives.
1. Knowledge and understanding: To stimulate empathy and sensibility towards different cultures through the analysis of the works of one of the most recognized Brazilian intellectuals: Darcy Ribeiro.

2. Applied knowledge and understanding: To analyze and interpret four literary works by Darcy Ribeiro in such a way that interdisciplinary knowledge can be broadened.

3. Autonomy of judgment: to develop the ability to acquire and apply adequate critical tools in the analysis of the texts indicated, on a thematic and stylistic-formal level, also by relating them to the context.

4. Communication skills: to understand the presentation of an academic discourse: express concepts with clarity and terminological precision; such as, for example, being able to distinguish Indianism from indigenism in the context of the Brazilian literary system.

5. Ability to learn: to recognize the typology of a text and formulate analysis hypotheses; the facts and materials examined and the ideas in a context of which they are an expression.
Basic knowledge of American history and cultures.
The year 2022 marks the centenary of the birth of one of the most important Brazilian intellectuals of the twentieth century: Darcy Ribeiro. His thinking about Latin America is alive not only in his vast academic output, but also in his novels. Darcy Ribeiro was a successful writer and quality novelist, with four books published. They are: Maíra (1976), O Mulo (1981), the fable Utopia Selvagem (1982) and Migo (1988). Known as a defender of the indigenous, his work was highly celebrated in the Italian cultural system between the seventies and nineties, because it promoted a new collective imagination of Latin American modernity.
The course is developed in two parts; a first dedicated to understanding the scenario of political instability in which Darcy Ribeiro lived and how part of his anthropological and sociological thought is developed and a second dedicated to his literary works. In the first segment, an in-depth study will be dedicated to political issues and Darcy Ribeiro's interpretations of the Brazilian people. In the second segment, each book will be read and analyzed in its aesthetic and structural narrative aspects.

Oral exam aimed to verify the degree of achievement of learning. To pass the exam it is also required a drafting of a short written paper (5-10 pp.) that explores a topic discussed in the course (it has to be agreed by teacher).
Frontal lessons. Video-classroom, Seminars. The course deals with literature in an interdisciplinary way. Multimedia materials will be used in addition to the bibliography, such as interviews and documentaries
