Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have acquired
- knowledge of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA): the fonemes of the English language
- knowledge of the notions of 'text' and 'context' and the importance of context in communication
- knowledge of theories relating to language use in its context of situation and context of culture
- knowledge of key concepts of Corpus Linguistics and TextSTAT (software for corpus analysis)
- improved knowledge of a number of grammatical aspects
Applying knowledge and competences
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- read and transcribe in the IPA
- anlayse different context characterising different communicative events
- identify the context of situation
- study the English language through corpus-based analysis
- assemble and analyse a corpus (key competences) by using TextSTAT
- carry out Web-based research to check language in context
- apply English grammar to writing
Making judgements
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- select communication strategies that be appropriate to the context
- justify and self-evaluate the communication strategies adopted
- select specific texts accoring to the type of corpus to be assembled

- Deep knowledge of your own mother tongue (usually Italian)

A good level of autonomy in the study method and a substantial cultural background will favour a rapid acquisition of the content of the course.

3. Language practice labs ("esercitazioni") with the CEL (Dr. Barbara Pagotto) to develop the B2 level (written and spoken language) - first and second semester
Contents of lecturer's module 1 (Prof. Fina)
Module 1 (Prof. Fina) will be held mainly in English.The ,module's title is "Language, context and linguistic analysis" and will include the following topics:
1. Basic aspects of Phonology (pronunciation and trascription in the IPA)
2. Theories on context: text and co-text, context of situation, context of culture (Malinowski, Halliday, Firth)
3. Corpus Linguistics (definition of ‘corpus’, comparable vs parallel corpora, key principles of corpus-based analysis, consultation of pre-assembled corpora, assembling corpora, corpus analysis)
4. Grammar elements (the grammar topics to be reviewed will be defined with the students based on their needs)

Contents of the language practice labs (Dott.ssa Barbara Pagotto)
In the language practice labs ("esercitazioni") with Dr. Pagotto, the student will improve their language skills in order to reach the B2 level of the CEFR.

Assessment methods
1. module 1 written test with Prof. Fina
2. module 2 written test with Prof. Coccetta
3. oral test with both lecturers
The module 1 written test lasts 45 minutes and will focus on the topics covered during the course. It will include the following question types:
- trascription into/from the IPA
- short answer questions
- open ended questions
- one grammar exercise
Each question will be assigned a number of points, the sum of which will be 30.
Further details and exam practice will be provided during the course.
The oral test will consist of a brief discussion of the written test aimed at further assessing the student's knowledge of the topics and the ability to use the appropriate terminology. ONly students who have passed both module 1 and module 2 written tests will be allowed to sit the oral exam. For the oral test, 0 to 3 points can be assigned, which will be added to the score obtained in the written test.
The final grade will be the average value obtained between mod. 1 score and mod. 2 score. In order for the final grade to be registered, in both modules you must score at least 18/30.
Teaching methods
All students must refer to the Moodle course (the link will be published before the start of the semester).
All the material that will be uploaded weekly on Moodle constitutes compulsory material for the written test.

Attendance is compulsory. In order to be admitted to sit the exam, students must have attended at least 75% of the whole course (module 1, module 2 and language practice labs).
