The course aims to offer an overview of the Nineteenth-Century Spanish novel in the European context, and therefore we will study 1) the main ideas and aesthetic concepts of the period, as well as 2) a selection of the main Spanish titles with particular attention to the narrative point of view.
At the end of the course, students will have to demonstrate that they know:
- The different concepts, movements and literary theories of nineteenth-century (and early twentieth-century) Spain, with particular attention to its narrative representation.
- The fundamental critical notions for the analysis of literary and historical texts, especially in the field of narratology.
- Development of independent judgment in the interpretation of texts, with the extra ability to re-elaborate bibliographic sources.
- Independent learning skills that allow you to apply the knowledge acquired to study texts.
Knowledge of the Spanish language, and ability to analyze and critically comment on the literary text.

Learning assessment occurs through two methods: 1) active participation in class, and 2) an oral exam consisting of three questions (theory, commentary on a passage and short presentation of a free reading).
Extra reading is chosen from a list on Moodle.
The course will combine theoretical and practical lessons: in addition to the teacher's lessons, the student will have to prepare the compulsory and supplementary readings to critically discuss in the lessons. The critical materials will be available on the University's Moodle e-learning platform.
Language of instruction: Spanish.
