SOCIAL ETHICS AND BIOETHICS

The course is aimed at propose a philosophical reflection, with practical implications, consistent with the course of Social Sciences and Social Work. The main topics of the course concerning the social ethics and bioethics are the concepts of human being, dignity of human person, liberty, autonomy, responsibility, ethics of reciprocity (Golden Rule), recognition and common good.

Upon the completion of the course students will be able to (Dublin descriptors):

1) Know and understand the strong bond between social ethics and bioethics, in addition to the essential features of the most significant moral theories, also in its practical implications,

2) Apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the course in morally conflictual contexts;

3) Make critical judgements on the main issues of the course and justify, by means of critical reason, possible solutions to moral conflicts;

4) Comunicate accurately and in a personal way the contents of the course, using the specific language.

5) Continue the path begun during the course indipendently, by means of the course material and the bibliographical references,

There are no specific requirements for course attendance.

After an introduction on the specific features of social ethics and bioethics, the first part of the course will be dedicated to these main topics: 1) an historical introduction to the distinction traced between medical ethics and modern bioethics; 2) the relationship between liberty, autonomy and autodetermination; 3) the principle of responsability; 4) ethics of reciprocity; 5) the relationship between personal good and common good. The second part of the course will be devoted to the bioethical issues in order to analyze some case studies, mainly focused on the care relationship and the end of life..
In last part of the course some brief conclusions will be proposed - starting with the contents of the course - about care relationship, health and common good.

A final written exam, to be completed in 2 hours, with three/four open-ended questions, which allow to give a free-form answer.
