Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
With regard to the ability to apply knowledge and understanding, the course will offer examples of the use of sources in a research perspective, preparing students to organise and pursue a study and research project on art-historical cultural heritage.
Expected learning outcomes
To know collections, archives, editions of sources useful for research.
To understand and evaluate the use of sources in specific literature; to acquire methodologies of approach and autonomy in their use.
To acquire communication skills: presentation of the contents of the sources; interpretative problems; analysis of artistic products in the light of the sources.

Contents
After a general methodological introduction, concrete cases will be dealt with, starting with the reading of published sources that will allow a journey through medieval and modern art, studying goldsmithery, liturgical furnishings, Venetian architecture and photography. Methodological topics will also be addressed: the tools of art historians, collections and collecting, protomuseums, liturgical furnishings.
The topics will be as follows:
1) TREASURES and ECCLESIASTIC FURNITURE.
1.1 The relics and liturgical furnishings of St. Mark's Church through the inventories of the Treasure of St. Mark's (1283 and 1325);
1.2 The 14th century inventories of the sacristy of the cathedral of Padua.
2) THE WILL OF A MERCHANT in Tabriz: 1263, Pietro Vioni
3) THE DUCAL PALACE in Venice
Sources for the 14th-century building site, the problem of Filippo Calendario, iconographic sources relating to the palace and St. Mark's Square.
4) COLLECTIONS AND COLLECTIONS, from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age through lists and inventories
4.1. The list of Oliviero Forzetta (1335);
4.2 The art market and art collections through inventories
5) THE VENETIAN HOUSE (Venetian interiors, furnishings and lifestyle) through the reading of inventories
5.1 The nobleman's house in the 16th century
5.2 Houses and palaces in 18th century Venice
6) ART HISTORIANS PHOTO LIBRARIES

Referral texts
Since there are no manuals or monographs that can be used, the main titles are proposed to the attending students for preparation and possible further study.
The sources read and analysed in the classroom, visual materials and some texts will be made available to students on the MOODLE platform.
In case it is not possible to follow the lessons in the classroom, students are invited to contact the teacher (via email) to arrange a meeting to acquire an understanding of the structure of the course (also thanks to the materials available in moodle) and agree (also based on the study path: medieval, modern or contemporary) among the topics proposed in the program the themes that will be the subject of the oral exam; the bibliography (mainly available in moodle) will be indicated to them based on the choice.
Assessment methods
Regarding the grading of the grade (how the grades will be assigned):
1) scores of 18-22 will be awarded in the presence of:
- sufficient knowledge and ability to understand the themes, works and sources covered by the program;
- limited ability to collect and/or interpret data, formulating independent judgments;
- sufficient communication skills, especially in relation to the use of specific language pertaining to the history of art;
2) scores in the 23-26 range will be awarded in the presence of:
- fair knowledge and ability to understand the themes, works and sources covered by the program;
- fair ability to collect and/or interpret data, formulating independent judgments;
- fair communication skills, especially in relation to the use of specific language pertaining to the history of art;
3) scores in the 27-30 range will be awarded in the presence of:
- good or excellent knowledge and ability to understand the themes, works and sources covered by the program;
- good or excellent ability to collect and/or interpret data, formulating autonomous judgments;
- fully appropriate communication skills, especially in relation to the use of the specific language of art history
4) honors will be awarded in the presence of knowledge and ability to understand the themes, works and sources covered by the program; excellent autonomous judgment skills and communication skills.
