HISTORY OF HISTORIOGRAPHY

The course offers an introduction and a first knowledge of some of the texts and debates among historians between the 19th and the 20th century

The expected results are the familiarization with some of the major theoretical and methodological contributions of historiography betwween the XIX and the XX centuries

There are no specific prerequirements.

Historians and historical method: the question of biography.
The course will examine, both through lectures and through common discussions of texts, some of the major methodological contributions of historiography between the XIX and the XX centuries, with a special attention to the question of biography

- Marc Bloch, Apologia della storia o mestiere di storico, Einaudi, Torino 2009 (o altre edizioni)
- Sabina Loriga, La piccola x. Dalla biografia alla storia, Sellerio, Palermo 2012

Students not attending lectures ("non frequentanti") should add the following two texts:

- A.M. Banti, V. Fiorino, C. Sorba (editors), Lessico della storia culturale, Laterza, Roma-Bari 2023
or:
- Francesco Benigno, Parole nel tempo. Un lessico per pensare la storia, Viella, Roma 2013
And:
- Peter Burke, Una rivoluzione storiografica. La scuola delle "Annales", Laterza, Roma-Bari 2002

For students attending the course (frequentanti), there will be an individual discussion of the texts in the course bibliography
For students not attending the course ("non frequentanti"), there will be an individual discussion on the bibliography for not attending students.
