DIAGNOSTIC FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE

This course of lectures will provide basic knowledge about main available diagnostic techniques supporting the investigation of artifacts.

Attending lectures and self study of course contents (slides and lecture notes, reference texts) will allow students to reach the following goals:


1. knowledge and understanding

● to know main diagnostic techniques currently available
● to know advantages and limitations, and applicability of such techniques to the study of artifacts
● to know the related technical vocabulary



2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

● to know how to evaluate the added value of diagnostic investigation to the study of artifacts
● to know how to correctly apply the technical terminology in application and communication of acquired knowledge



3. Judgment

● to know how to evaluate the need of diagnostic investigation to support the historical information
● to know how to formulate basic hypothesis about diagnostic investigation of an artifact


4. Communication skills

● to know how to interact with other students and with the professor in a critical and educationally responsible manner
● to know how to communicate own evaluations of diagnostic results with suitable terminology


5. Ability to learn

● to know how to correctly take notes, critically evaluate and share them in a collaborative way
● to know how to critically examine suggested bibliography

No prerequisite is required

The verification of learning will take place through a written text based on 3 open-ended questions to be completed within 2 h, and focused on specific arguments discussed during the lectures. The student will have to demonstrate to have critically understood issues related to the application of diagnostic techniques to artifacts, and to discuss acquired knowledge and competences with adequate language skills.

According to the number of attendees and availability of host institutions, an onsite non invasive diagnostic session on representative artifacts will be arranged in a Venice museum.
