HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL ART

The teaching of Medieval Art History is the second module of the ARCHEOLOGY AND HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL ART course. The first module (Medieval Archeology) is held by prof. Carlo Beltrame. The course aims to offer in-depth knowledge on a theme that will allow us to address more aspects of medieval art (architecture, sculpture, pictorial decoration).

Getting to know medieval works and contexts, placing them within a broader - even historical - perspective.
Knowing how to describe, analyze the architecture and decorations (sculptures, furnishings, paintings) reconstructing their phases, interpreting their peculiarities, cultural relationships, chronological and cultural placement.
Acquire autonomy in directing research on a topic / object relevant to the topic of the course (agreed and guided by the teacher).
Acquire communication skills in presenting one's research in a seminar setting.
Acquire research skills in order to write a scientific text.

No prerequisite is required.

PALAZZO DUCALE, VENICE
The course aims to illustrate during the lessons and possibly deepen with seminar work the Doge's Palace in Venice, currently a museum of offices, retracing its events for the medieval period with particular attention to the fourteenth-century phase.
Attention will be paid to the current uses of the Palazzo, home to offices, the most visited Venetian monument, home to temporary exhibitions and an Museo dell’opera that documents its fourteenth-century construction and the restauration.

The main bibliography of general orientation will be provided at the beginning of the course and partly made available on the moodle platform; further bibliographical information will be provided to students after the choice of the topic for individual study. The materials (ppt) projected during the lessons will also be available on the moodle platform.

Students are invited to present a topic for individual study in the course of the lectures or in the final seminar. The topic presented will be the subject of a short written report to be submitted 1 week before the oral exam. The report will be discussed during the oral exam. The assessment will therefore take into account both any exposure in the classroom and the written report. The maximum evaluation will be given to works of particular originality, the subject of critical in-depth studies, exhibited with properties, presented in an edited written form, with a mature argumentative structure. A good evaluation will take into account the work carried out, the exhibition and the final draft, recognizing the elements acquired.

Taking into account the articulation of the course in a single period (the III) and not knowing at the present time the timetable and distribution of the lessons, this organization is proposed at the moment:
- in the first weeks (III period of the teaching calendar) lectures will be held by the teacher, making useful materials (literature and powerpoint) available on the MOODLE platform from time to time
- in the middle of the course, a list of possible topics for individual study will be proposed that can be exposed in the final seminar.
- visits will be organized starting from the third week of lessons.
-from the third week any exhibitions of ongoing students will also be scheduled
- hopefully (based on the number of participants) a final seminar will be scheduled.

Italian

Attendance of the course is recommended. The students those who could not attend will have to agree on the program with the teacher at the reception.
Bibliographies will not be provided by e-mail without an interview.
