The course is part of the Master in Chemistry and Sustainable Technologies, and runs in the first semester of the third year. The student will have the opportunity to make experiments on the optical, electrical, electronic, magnetic and thermal properties of various classes of materials, from metals to semiconductors, putting into practice the knowledge acquired in the theoretical courses already attended. The experiments carried out will concern both traditional and innovative materials.
The student will further develop his ability to conduct an experiment in the laboratory and will become familiar with the properties of some materials. The experiments on innovative materials will also open a window on some sectors of current research, putting him in comparison with scientific reading. The writing of the reports will stimulate him to use the correct scientific language and the linguistic register suitable for a laboratory report, similar, but not the same, to that of a scientific article.
Prerequisites to attend the course successfully include the basic knowledge of general physics, chemistry and quantum mechanics.
Hysteresis of ferromagnetic materials
Energy gap of semiconductors
Measurement of the speed of light
Electric resistance as a function of temperature in metals and semiconductors

Basic texts of materials science, general physics and solid state physics for the energy gap in semiconductors.
The students will undergo oral examination at the end of the course and evaluation of the reports connected with the experiments.
The course will include classes in preparation to experiments, including examples of data analysis and data report.
