The course aims to introduce students to the world of archives and libraries, with the aim of making them aware of the conservation purposes of the cultural heritage of the two types of institutes and the ability to access and use the materials preserved in them.
Knowledge of the structures of conservation of the archival and bibliographic heritage in Italy. Ability to access and use materials preserved in archives and libraries to conduct research. Understand the history and mechanisms by which the archival and bibliographic heritage was formed in Italy.
The student must know the political and institutional history of Italy from the Middle Ages to the XXI century. The student must know in broad terms the institutional and administrative structure of the Italian Republic.
Definition of archive and purpose of archives.
Definition of library and purpose of libraries.
Organization and management of archives and libraries in Italy.
Stages of archive life.
Management activities in each phase of the archive: creation, selection, conservation, description, communication and enhancement.
Manage a library.
Archival citation and bibliographic citation.
Transparency, administrative access, access for research purposes, privacy and copyright.

The exam will be in oral form.
Attendance of classes is strongly encouraged.
The lectures will be accompanied, if possible, by visits to some archival institute or library and discussion of cases.
