This course is part of Minor Asia: cultures, societies and markets and aims at providing students with basic knowledge and tools to understand societies, cultures and markets of the Arab world on one hand, and of the social, cultural, religious and economic universe of the Indian subcontinent on the other hand. This course will also present the basic methodological tools allowing a critical re-elaboration of the topics of the course.

At the end of the course the student will have to demonstrate that he/she has learned the fundamental notions concerning the main aspects of the social, cultural and economic realities of the course, with particular attention to the relationship between tradition and modernity. In addition, through lectures, the study of materials and any individual study, students will acquire basic skills on research methodologies and critical review of content.

The course is structured as follows:
Geographical and methodological introduction (MENA and Orientalism, the regions and countries of the Arab world and the Indian subcontinent) aimed at providing an initial methodological framework necessary for the subsequent topics of the course.
Society (inequalities, environment, demography, institutions). This part is aimed at analyzing case studies regarding some social issues of current importance in some of the countries of interest in the course.
Markets (Resources, Industry). The last part of the course will touch on economic issues in relation to some resources (water, oil) and key industrial areas of the regions discussed in the course.

The contents related to the Indian subcontinent will be developed under the supervision of Andrea Drocco (PhD).
Reading materials and slides will be provided in class.

You will be required to investigate a topic of your choice related to the course content. The student will be required to prepare a short presentation (max 20 min) to be given in class. The overall assessment will be on the presentation work and oral discussion of the course topics, particularly those involved in each student's presentation.
Expository skills, the ability to critically approach the proposed readings and themes, as well as to link the proposed analyses to prior knowledge or knowledge acquired during other formative activities will be evaluated.
All students (attending and not) are invited to communicate to the teacher the chosen topic of study and to agree on the timing of the in-class presentation.
Lectures and class discussion, presentation of teaching materials. Part of the lectures will be given by guest lecturers, particularly on the Indian subcontinent.
