Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals

This course is part of the "Minor Asia: cultures, societies and markets" and aims to providing different perspectives on China and South-East Asia and the historical and political-social background, contextualizing and understanding the socio-cultural and economic transformations occurred in recent times.

Expected learning outcomes

Acquisition of basic notions concerning the main social and cultural phenomena that have taken place in China and in South-east Asia in the last decades with a focus on the relationship between tradition and modernity. Through individual or group works, students will acquire skills in research methodologies and they will develop a critical approach.

Pre-requirements

The course does not require specific basic skills.
Knowledge of Italian and English language.

Contents

The course will focus on some issues about social changes in China over recent decades that will be discussed through the analysis of the relationship between society and power and the role of the institutions. Students will participate in the debate through in-depth analysis on specific topics of particular interest useful to trace an overview of contemporary Chinese society (media, environment, politics, to name but a few) and South-East Asia.
Experts on specific topics will be invited.

Reading materials and slides will be provided in class.

Assessment methods

Short tests will be held to keep track of learning achievements. These tests are not graded. Assignments on different topics.

Teaching methods

Classes are held face-to-face in Italian.
Some of the topics will be introduced by guest speakers.
