TECHNOLOGY FOR TRANSLATION: APPROACHES AND TOOLS (ENGLISH)

The course "Technologies for translation: methods and tools (English) is part of the activities defined as "affini/integrative" (supplementary) of the degree course in Lingustic and Cultural Mediation. The course aims to provide students with knowledge and skills that are relevant to EN>ITA and ITA>EN translations by means of tools and methods that characterise this area. The course is a30-hour course to be held over six months and will be focused on the key principles of Corpus Linguistics applied to translation and on the ability to use software for corpus-based analysis.

By the end of the course, students are expected to acquire the following:

Knowledge and Understanding
- in-depth knoeledge and understanding of the concepts of 'text' and 'co-text' and the importance of context in communication
- knowledge of theories regarding language in context (both context of situation and context of culture)
- knowledge of the key concepts of Corpus Linguistics and of the software TextSTAT

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- being able to apply the context of situation
- being able to analyse corpora for understanding the way language is used in context
- being able to assemble and search a corpus using TextSTAT
- being able to carry out Web-based research to the the use of language in context

Making judgements
- being able to select specific texts according to the type of corpus to be assembled
- being able to recognise potential translation equivalent in corpus-based translation
- being able to justify and assess the communication strategies that have been adopted
- being able to assess the appropriacy of linguistic expressions based on context

Communication skills
- being able to use appropriate metalanguage in language anlysis
- being able to communicate one's own ideas both in class and on Moodle

Learning skills
- being able to self-orient among the differente contexts in which language can be used

- English language competences at at least B2 level
- Excellent knowledge of Italian (for international students a B2 level is required)
- A positive attitude to IT
- A positive attitude to group work
- A very good mastery of Web-based research tools
- A very good mastery of the Italian language

Having a good computer at home is essential. If possible, bring your laptop when required (NOT compulsory!)

The course is named "Corpus-based linguistic analysis and Corpus Linguistics applied to translation". The topics of the course are the following:
1. Theories on text and context: text and co-text, context of situation, context of culture (Malinowski, Halliday, Firth)
2. Corpus Linguistics (definition of 'corpus', comparable vs parallel corpora, key principles of corpus analysis, searching pre-assembled corpora, creating corpora, corpus analysis)
3. Software for assembling and analysing corpora
4. Analisi of pre-assembled corpora from and English vs Italian contrastive perspective
5. Project group work
6. Methods for Web-based linguistic research

Other materials will be provided by the lecturer.

The exam will be a written test on the theoretical and practical contents of the course. It is highly recommended that you bring your own laptops on the exam date so that the test can take place on Moodle.
As part of the exam, over the course the students must also carry out a small group project on corpus-based analysis.

The course will be held mainly in English and will consist of both lecture-based and interactive classes. For learning purposes, students are required to actively participate in the exam practice activities and discussions, both in the classroom and on Moodle.

Attendance is compulsory.
