This course will focus on the musical language, its forms and its practice in the historical-cultural context of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
- Knowledge and awareness of the historical and social context as well as of the main musical forms in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
- Ability to formulate a critical approach in relation to theoretical and musical texts
- Ability to analyze by listening and reading musical documents.
Basic knowledge in music
During the lessons, the fundamental themes of music theory and compositional techniques in European musical culture from the early Middle Ages to the dawn of the seventeenth century will be critically treated. Thanks to specific examples, the course will focus on the following topics: liturgical chant repertoires and Gregorian chant; the birth of musical notation; the sacred and profane polyphony of Ars Antiqua and Ars nova; the madrigal of the sixteenth century; the affirmation of the accompanied monody.

The exam will consist of an oral interview on the topics discussed in the course.
Frontal lessons integrated with readings, musical examples and guided listening. In the last week of the course, the intervention of an expert on specific topics of the course is expected.
