Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
Theoretical and applied knowledge of English as an L1 and L2 in different contexts, with a focus on phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
ability to recognize and describe the phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics of different written and spoken texts,in different formal and informal contexts.
Autonomy and independent thinking:
ability to independently apply theoretical knowledge to new linguistic problem sets, texts, situations
Communicative competence:
ability to express oneself at a B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference i(CEFR) n English
Ability to learn independently:
Ability to conduct bibliographic research, ability to monitor one's progress and conduct self-assessment with respect to one's linguistic progress in English

Contents
-consonants and vowels of English, -minimal pairs and allophones, comparison with Italian and Spanish, IPA transcription, -syllable structure
-stress and connected speech. Dialects and sociolinguistic variation (regional, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status)
Applications of phonetics/phonology and sociolinguistic variation to cross-cultural communication and mediation.
Morphology:word classes (adjectives, verbs. adverbs, prepositions, determiners, complementizers), inflection, derivation, other types of word formation. Applications to lexicography and translation.
Syntax: constituent structure, lexical categories, functional categories, movement, empty categories and null subjects, lexical verbs and argument structure, unmarked words orders. Passives. Register. Applications to translation, written and spoken cross-cultural mediation.
Semantics; lexical ambiguity, structural ambiguity, semantic roles.
Pragmatics: speech acts, politeness, applications to linguistic and cultural mediation.

Assessment methods
Prof. Bencini's exam is structured into three sections, each worth 10 points. Section 1: transcription into IPA; Section 2: 5 theoretical questions ((multiple choice format); Section 3: transcription and analysis of a passage from IPA into standard orthography.
