The course contributes to the objectives of the Degree Program, as it provides the concepts and language useful to interpret the business and economic reality, to understand the role of economic entities in their various configurations, to understand the business strategy according with the external environment and the internal structure and evaluate and represent the attitude of an organization to thrive and fulfill its goals.
By the end of the course, students are expected to:
1) have developed a solid knowledge and understanding of the concept of firm, being able to distinguish among: institutional, strategic, organizational and economic aspects;
2) be able to to critically recognize the managerial dimension (in its institutional, strategic, organizational, and economic aspects) of concrete cultural organizations in the real world.
As this is an introductory course to Business Management and Accounting, no specific prior knowledge is required. The course however favourably welcomes students with a critical approach and with initiative, as well as the willingness to actively participate to the group work (strongly recommended) and to class discussions with constructive questions and comments that may benefit all participants.
The course is organized in an introductory week, four thematic blocks, and one conclusive lecture.
Every thematic block is composed of (a) two theoretical lectures, in which the most relevant concepts will be introduced, and (b) one discussion seminar in which we will apply the theoretical concepts of that thematic block to some concrete cases of cultural organizations. The discussion seminar will be basaed on a weekly "mini-assignment" in which the students, by groups, will analyze one aspect of the managerial dimension of a cultural organization.
