The thematic seminar, for the master's degree courses in which it is offered, aims to develop a specific theme by analyzing it from the different linguistic and cultural perspectives of the Near and Middle Eastern area. The theme of the current year will be: Rhetorical system and text science in the languages and cultures of the Near and Middle Eastern Area.
The expected learning outcomes concern theoretical and practical skills in the analysis of a classical literary text from a rhetorical, critical-literary and aesthetic point of view, based on the different linguistic-cultural ideologies of the area in which it was produced.
Good proficiency in the main language of study (classical language for literary text and contemporary language for essays) . Familiarity with the major rhetorical structures of the Italian language and related terminology.
The course will take place on two levels: one part will be devoted to the history of the theoretical approach to text analysis as it developed in the Islamic world between the 11th and the 20th centuries; a seminar part will be dedicated to different cultural traditions according to the language of study of the students enrolled in the course (Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Hebrew, Armenian, etc.). With respect to non-'Islamic' cultural traditions, there will be contributions from colleagues specialized in other areas. The final part of the course will be dedicated to a critical-contrast approach to what emerged during the seminar.
The course bibliography will be provided during class, respecting and favoring the areas represented by students enrolled in the thematic seminar.
The mode of verification will consist of a oral and written report that each student must submit in its final version by the date of the examination. Each paper will have been previously presented in class and discussed with the course participants. The paper may concern the analysis of a classic or modern text, the theoretical approach of a critical current, the aesthetic-philosophical system of a specific area and a specific historical period.
Lectures, seminar meetings, and discussion groups.
