This course presents the chemical approach for the study, planning and management of the coastal marine environment, which are significant aspects within the professional training of the Master's degree (class LM-75). The role of chemical substances and processes in determining environmental quality and the related environmental risks for marine and transition environments is highlighted, both when these are important resources for human livelihood and when they must be considered essential elements for the conservation of the biodiversity of our planet, also in relation to the global changes taking place.
Knowledge and understanding
The student will have acquired knowledge of the main chemical processes that occur in marine and transition environments, and understanding the procedures for assessing environmental quality and environmental risks for marine and transitional environments

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
The student will have acquired the necessary skills to recognize how chemical processes are fundamental in determining environmental quality and the related environmental risks for marine and transition environments, including impacts due to climate change

Judgment autonomy
The student will have acquired knowledge of chemistry and environmental risk analysis that allow him to formulate hypotheses suitable for the control, management, adaptation and remediation of environmental conditions

Communication skills
The student will have developed communication skills based on correct scientific terminology and also on the use of multimedia tools

Learning ability
The student will have acquired fundamental professionalising elements for the training of a LM-75 Master's degree (Sciences and technologies for the environment and the territory)
The student must have acquired the basic concepts in General and inorganic chemistry, Organic chemistry, Physical chemistry, Analytical chemistry and Ecology
Environmental chemistry in the aquatic environment
Environmental risk analysis
Procedures for assessing environmental quality in marine and transitional environments
Impacts of climate change on chemical processes in marine and transitional environments
Compulsory:
Slides sent by the teacher and lecture notes

Optional:
F. Millero. "Chemical Oceanography". CRC Press.
S. Libes."An Introduction to Marine Biogeochemistry". J. Wiley
Written exam consisting of open questions to be answered in 1 hour (70% of final score).
The classroom exercise conducted by students during the course and its presentation will also be considered (20% of the grade).
Active participation to lectures is positively evaluated (10% of final score).
For students not attending the course the examination procedures will be agreed with the teacher.
Classroom lectures, classroom exercises and seminars.
Presentations concerning issues discussed during the lectures, provided by students.
