The course will be an introduction to some main authors and ideas of medieval political thought, in particular regarding the birth of medieval political philosophy.
The students will acquire knowledge of the theoretical structure of the main strands of medieval political thought and their placement within the history of Western political philosophy.
They will acquire an adequate comprehension philosophical and political medieval issues and the deepening of their specificities and also historiografical interpretations.
A previous knowledge of medieval philosophy is very helpful.
In the first part of the course we will introduce the main issues of the medieval political thought. In the second part we will focus on the relationship between ecclesiology, theology, and political philosophy in Marsilius of Padua's Defensor pacis.
